Haapapuro created massive figures in an open studio on Courthouse Square in Dayton OH to tell the story of those who died building the US canal system in the 1800s. Known at the time as “The Longest Grave” the canal was made obsolete by the railroad before itʼs completion, and the canal men forgotten. Commemorative flowers of plastic debris were made in a series of public workshops where Historian Leon Bey provided more information.
Visitors to Haapapuro’s open studio and flower making participants were invited to come see the canal men while they were displayed in the decorative canals of downtown Dayton. The temporary installation encouraged those passing by to stop and wonder. There was information about the project posted nearby with links to learn more. Site specific and uncanny, the canal men installation shared stories of a past time, but still relevant.
