2017, glass mosaics on plastic; 4ʼx12ʼx1”.
The mosaic medallions were made during free public workshops and open studio sessions while Haapapuro was artist-in-residence at the Vandalia branch of the Dayton Metro Library. Haapapuro’s studio was open during regular library hours. People often stopped in to watch as the artist cut glass or grout completed mosaics. They were invited to make mosaics for the library’s permanent installation or make a mosaic to give to a loved one.
The option to make a medallion for the permanent art installation, or take it with them provided a choice to contribute to the project or to make the project their own. Most made more than one. Families made art together, collaborating with their young children. Members of a nearby senior center visited often. Teens from the high school next door came by to work on their mosaics after school.
